Last week Layer 7 sponsored Forrester’s CIO and Enterprise Architecture forums in Las Vegas. These were great conferences with various tracks covering such lofty concepts as “business strategy” and “innovation”. But the track that was getting everyone talking – and driving attendance at the Layer 7 booth – was about mobile strategy. CIOs have started to recognize that – with BYOD gaining strength – mobile is coming to business, like it or not. The many CIOs who came by our booth all seemed determined to address the issue head-on. For some, this will mean developing apps in-house; for others, enabling third-party app developers. In either case, the key to success will be publishing secure, robust APIs. Publishing mobile APIs raises various questions for CIOs. Some of the questions we heard in Vegas are external corollaries of challenges we’ve been solving for years (... (more)

Geofencing & Mobile Access Gateways

One of the cooler features offered by Siri on the iPhone is its integration with the internal GPS for geofencing. For instance, you can tell her (yes, I just anthropomorphized a disembodied mobile phone app) to “remind me to pick up some milk when I leave the house”. While this geofencing application is very consumer-centric and a nice-to-have, geolocation (and geofencing) is often a must-have for enterprise mobile apps. At Layer 7, our enterprise customers are sometimes constrained by industry regulations regarding data privacy. These restrictions, especially in the healthcare ... (more)

Layer 7 Comes to Gartner Catalyst in San Diego

As a San Diego resident, I always love it when friends or relatives come for a visit because it gives me an opportunity to show off the great attractions that America’s Finest City has to offer. From the beaches to the parks to the World Famous San Diego Zoo, there is a multitude of great sights to see. Next week, IT professionals and enterprise decision makers will descend on San Diego for the Gartner Catalyst Conference. While I hope they have the opportunity to see something of the city, there will be plenty of sights at the Manchester Grand Hyatt from Monday to Wednesday. Disc... (more)

Layer 7 at the International SOA, Cloud + Service Technology Symposium

The International SOA, Cloud + Service Technology Symposium takes place next week in London and the track titles remind me how much SOA has changed in the last 10 years. Mobile and cloud use cases have revolutionized the way we architect, deploy and manage SOA infrastructures, resulting in forward-looking tracks such as “New Service-Orientation Practices & Models” and “Emerging Service Technology Innovation.” For the Layer 7 perspective on these service technology trends, come see our presentations throughout the week. On Monday, I’ll be speaking about how traditional SOA techno... (more)

The Oracle-Versus-Google Verdict Comes Down

Whew! That loud sigh of relief you hear reverberating from Silicon Valley is a reaction to the June 1st Oracle-Google ruling, which declared that APIs are not protected by copyright. While this case could be far from over – Oracle may appeal and force another $50 million round of litigation – a knowledgeable judge and a well-argued 41-page decision will likely make for a strong precedent. In the few weeks, since I last discussed this case, I’ve gotten a lot of feedback. While some techies provided commentary supporting Google’s position, more responses came in the form of questi...
